AKC Breeders’ Best Advice On Flea Prevention

At Royal Empire French Bulldogs, we specialize in breeding loving, cuddly companions for California families. Once you’ve adopted your new four-legged friend, you’ll want to keep them as healthy as possible. That’s why it’s important to listen to American Kennel Club breeders’ best advice on flea prevention for your fabulous Frenchie.

Why Are Fleas Dangerous?

Nobody wants their puppy to have fleas, if only because little bugs living on your furry friend is gross. But preventing fleas goes well beyond aesthetics and perceived ickiness. Fleas go through four life cycle stages—pupae, larvae, eggs, and adults. All four stages can include harm to your puppy, but the adult stage presents the greatest risk.

When adult fleas suck your puppy’s blood, this can trigger an allergic reaction on the puppy’s skin. In short, your puppy gets very itchy! All the resulting scratching, biting, licking, and chewing can cause significant hair loss, not to mention how uncomfortable your puppy feels.

Fleas can also cause diseases in your puppy. Some of those diseases are even transmittable to people! Common flea-related diseases include spotted fever, dog scratch fever, and plague.

What Can You Do?

The best way to stop fleas is to prevent them from moving into your puppy’s fur in the first place. There are several different ways to stop fleas before they arrive. Here are some of our favorites at Royal Empire French Bulldogs.

Medicine

Just like humans, puppies can take medicine to prevent problems like fleas. Our favorite straightforward flea-prevention medicine is Frontline Plus for Dogs, which is a type of drops. You won’t even have to convince your Frenchie to eat their medicine—just apply the drops to the back of your puppy’s neck, where they won’t be able to lick it off (even if it seems tempting.)

Frontline Plus is safe for dogs between five and twenty-two pounds, activates in 12 hours, and works for a full 30 days. Even better, while it’s perfect for preventing fleas, it will also kill any fleas that may have already gotten through to your pooch.

Shampoo

Aren’t you glad that humans don’t need flea-prevention shampoo? It’s very helpful for your Frenchie, though.

Vet’s Best Flea and Tick Advanced Strength Dog Shampoo is one of the best available options. It’s made from 100% natural ingredients and essential oils—no chemicals. If your dog has any fleas, five to ten minutes of scrubbing with this gentle formula will kill them, making it easy to wash them down the drain when you rinse the shampoo off.

Spot Treatment

Chances are, your puppy has favorite spots around your house, whether it’s a fancy dog bed or a particular old blanket. Using a product like Wondercide to spray those areas, in addition to spraying your dog directly, helps to prevent flea infestations without bothering your fuzzy friend. Better yet, Wondercide comes in four pleasant scents: cedar, rosemary, lemongrass, and peppermint.
