Feeding a puppy can be tricky. Those tiny bodies can only handle so much food and not all Frenchies have an off switch when it comes to eating. Additionally, a puppy standing next to its bowl giving you a look asking for more food can be tough to resist. We understand all of this at Royal Empire French Bulldogs, so we’ve put together a short guide to answer your question, “How much should a French bulldog puppy eat?” In addition to answering this question, we also have recommendations for what to feed your puppy and when to increase how much you feed him or her.
How much your puppy should eat
Finding the right amount of food for your French bulldog puppy can be difficult. They’re so small that it’s easy to overfeed them. However, you still want to make sure they’re getting the proper amount of nutrition that they grow healthy and strong. A cup to a cup and a half each day is typically sufficient for an average-sized French bulldog puppy. To keep your puppy from overeating, you can spread this serving out by giving it three times a day. Keep in mind this is a cup to a cup and a half total spread out across the day, not that amount three times a day.
When to increase your puppy’s food
As your French bulldog grows, it’s important that the amount of food you’re giving him or her grows as well. Remember that your puppy won’t be very big once he or she has reached its full size, so the amount of food isn’t going to increase much. In fact, a full-grown French bulldog doesn’t often weigh more than about 25 to 30 pounds. This means that two cups of food each day should be sufficient. Although, you should follow your vet’s recommendations should they suggest more or less food for your dog.
What to feed your puppy
A good diet is important to ensure that your puppy is getting the necessary nutrients to grow into a healthy and strong French bulldog. Look for quality dry dog foods that provide high-quality animal protein from fish, poultry, and red meats. The protein and fats from these meats give your dog plenty of energy. The omega-3 fatty acids also help with healthy skin and coat. You can tell your dog is getting proper nutrition by looking at the state of its coat or the rate at which he or she is growing.
What not to feed your puppy
Our dogs are a part of our family, so it’s understandable that we want to share with them food from the table. Unfortunately, this is not only unhealthy for your dog, it can be dangerous. Certain human foods are difficult for dogs to digest and can cause problems internally. For example, chocolate is at the top of the list of foods your dog shouldn’t eat as well as bones, coffee, grapes, tomatoes, and more. To ensure that your dog stays healthy, stick with dry dog food.
